Having worked closely with dozens of startups, ZK Program Manager Elliot Leimer shares his advice for founders
Take stock. what are your assets, besides cash? This could be IP in the form of code, a community or talent you’ve convinced to join you. These are the weapons for your upcoming battle, use them wisely.
Identify the quickest path to revenue. How can you use your assets to generate cash flow. It doesn’t need to be scalable or sexy. One of the startups I worked at couldn’t make payroll. The next month, we signed 3 consulting gigs that gave us an extra 4 months of runway.
Alternative funding. I always encourage founders to apply for grants, wether it be ecosystem funds, research grants or even government incentives programs, you’d be surprised at what you can find.
Iterate, fast. The sooner you take feedback and iterate on your value prop, the easier it will be to convince someone to pay you for your services and eventually find product market fit.
Change the narrative. Sometimes it’s just a question of positioning. Your solution might be perfectly suited to a different customer base than you initially envisioned.
Be honest. Not just with your staff, but with yourself. The founders that have inspired me to stay on when they couldn’t make payroll were the ones that were honest, with a plan.
